It's incredible to find such natural beauty so close to a major city. Mere minutes out of Portland, Oregon, starts the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Drive the Oregon side for stunning views of waterfalls, some of which you can see without leaving the freeway. For a more intimate drive, get off the Interstate and cruise Historic Highway 30. Watch the scenery change from lush forest to high desert as you go east. Be sure to spend some time in quaint towns along the way like Hood River, Cascade Locks and The Dalles.
The majestic beauty of the Rocky Mountains is on full display here. This is a terrific summer drive, with temperatures that aren't too extreme for you to keep the top down. See historic Colorado towns like Cortez, Telluride and Durango tucked away among high peaks. The San Juan Skyway loop is just over 230 miles, but you should plan on spending all day taking everything in. Be sure to check out Mesa Verde National Park, located just to the southeast of Cortez.
Drive across the Mackinac Bridge into Michigan's Upper Peninsula and explore an area that defies categorization. Discover any number of cool exploratory routes that can transport you to a wonderful experience. The Tahquamenon Scenic Pure Michigan Highway is just 63 miles, but takes you to the third largest waterfall east of the Mississippi and beautiful lighthouses off the beaten path.
Route 100 through Vermont is called the Skiers Highway because it connects so many mountain resort areas, but it's just as famous for incredible fall colors. Start in Wilmington and go north along the east slopes of the Green Mountains, the Okemo State Forest and picturesque valleys with quaint historic villages nestled in them. Stop for a picnic at Warren Falls or stroll Weston--the entire village is on the National Register of Historic Places.
