Buick Motor Car History

A Tradition of Innovation

Since its inception in 1903 when David Dunbar Buick incorporated the Buick Motor Company, the Buick line has been built around a proud history of producing precision automobiles. In fact, the overhead valve engine (later advertised by Buick as the valve-in-head engine) was the innovative base from which the Buick success story was created.

Soon Buick became the largest carmaker in America and the base for the newly created General Motors Corporation. From the overhead valve engine — which earned an unsurpassed early reputation in competition around the world — to innovations like Buick's sweepspears, hardtops, portholes, and muscle cars, Buick was instrumental in pioneering the modern car industry. Classics like the Electra, Grand National, Skylark, and Roadmaster have become icons of American culture.

Now more than 100 years old, Buick is continuing in its long tradition of excellence by offering three truly innovative vehicles that are among the most beautiful on the road today. It all starts with Enclave—the finest luxury crossover ever. Next, there's Lucerne, which defines sophisticated luxury. And then there's LaCrosse, which proudly boasts distinctive styling and athletic drivability. Together they make up the new generation of Buick, sharing meticulously crafted elegance, stunning technological innovations, and reassuring comfort and safety.

Buick Rainier

Buick Rainier

In 2004, Buick introduced the Rainier to drivers who wanted the size and strength of an SUV with the finer features of a luxury vehicle. With standard amenities like perforated leather-appointed seats, 8-way power driver and front passenger seats, and a genuine wood-accented steering wheel, Rainier boasted an interior both refined and elegant. For the 2008 model year, this combination of power and luxury is brought to you in Enclave.

Buick Terraza

With the introduction of Terraza in 2005, Buick introduced the novel combination of luxury, performance, and the ability to carry seven passengers comfortably. Terraza pampered drivers with extended-range sound systems, a high-tech, high-horsepower engine, and rich, supple available leather seating surfaces. Terraza left the Buick line for the 2008 model year. This combination of luxury, performance and passenger-carrying ability is now brought to you in Enclave - the finest luxury crossover ever.

Buick LeSabre

Buick LeSabre

One of the best-selling full-size cars in the Buick line, the Buick LeSabre's long proud history of refined elegance kept it in production from 1959 to 2005. In fact, when LeSabre was finally taken out of production in 2005 it had been America's best selling full-size sedan for more than 12 consecutive years. To see where the legacy of LeSabre has taken Buick, look no further than the Buick Lucerne.
