Getting started with Bluetooth Audio Streaming

First you must pair your Bluetooth-enabled phone or device.4 If the device supports Bluetooth Streaming Audio, the music stored on the device will start playing over the vehicle’s speakers. You can then use the enhanced voice control to manage it. Press the PUSH TO TALK button on your steering wheel and say, “Play Bluetooth Audio” or “Shuffle On,” if the device supports that type of functionality.

Can my older Bluetooth® phone work with the IntelliLink system?

Most Bluetooth phones work with IntelliLink. Older phones may not support all the features of IntelliLink, but can still allow you to make hands free calls. You can stream audio from any smartphone that supports Bluetooth Audio Streaming. And you can stream both Pandora® and Stitcher® if you use a smartphone that runs on the Android™ operating system. On BlackBerry® smartphones, you can stream Pandora.®

Why won't my iPhone work with Bluetooth Audio Streaming?

Due to certain circumstances, any smartphone or device utilizing Apple’s iPhone OS will play its audio over the speakers, but must be plugged into the USB port in the center console to take full advantage of the IntelliLink system.

Why does my iPhone stop Bluetooth function when I plug into the USB?

Apple devices that are connected through only Bluetooth only (USB not connected) will be able to play audio through Bluetooth audio streaming. But you will not be able to access the full menu navigation and voice search feature until you connect the device through USB. When the device is connected with USB and Bluetooth the Bluetooth Audio feature is disabled.

If there is more than one Bluetooth-enabled device(4) in the vehicle, which device will IntelliLink default to?

IntelliLink can recognize up to five different Bluetooth-enabled devices. It will recognize the devices in the order in which they are listed on screen. If a device listed isn’t in the vehicle, IntelliLink will recognize this and immediately pair with the device that is in the vehicle.

If there is more than one device in the vehicle, how can I switch devices?

IntelliLink stores up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices.4 Simply access your settings to see the list of different paired devices. Scroll through the list to find the device you’re looking for. You can also press the push to talk button and say “Change Phone.”

How can I switch devices?

If one device is paired, like a smartphone, and you would like to switch to a different paired device, simply go into the device list under Bluetooth Settings and select the Bluetooth-enabled device. You can also connect different USB devices3 to IntelliLink. Up to five different Bluetooth-enabled devices4 can be paired with one connected through the USB at one time. You can also press the push to talk button and say “Change Phone.”

I paired my phone and it's playing music, but I can't see any of my information on screen?

IntelliLink supports AVRCP 1.3 profile. This allows you to pair your Bluetooth-enabled device4 and see all of your song information on your IntelliLink screen. However, certain devices, like the iPod®/iPhone® utilize AVRCP 1.0 (iPhone 4S supports audio information with AVRCP 1.4), and while the music will play over the speakers, information about the current song playing is unable to transfer.

Getting started

To access your music, you must first connect your music storage device (iPod®/iPhone®, smartphone, MP3 player or USB device3) to the IntelliLink system through your (A) USB port located in the center console. Once the storage device has been connected, IntelliLink will index all of the music on your device. You can also connect and play music off any iPad®, AndroidTM tablet or phone or any other device that can store music and act as a USB device.

Using the on-screen menu

IntelliLink incorporates many of the familiar functions of your iPod®. You can (A) shuffle songs and let IntelliLink create a unique playlist just for you. Play songs similar to what you're listening to (B), or search by (C) playlists, (D) artists, (E) albums, genres, and more.

Using the voice control

Keeping your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road while your driving is our number one priority. IntelliLink lets you do just that by utilizing its enhanced voice control technology to listen to whatever you want from your connected device. Simply press (A) PUSH TO TALK button on your steering wheel and say, “Play Artist ________”, “Shuffle on” or “Play genre jazz” and IntelliLink will find exactly what you’re looking for. IntelliLink also lets you search a list of songs by artist, album or genre. Say “Search Genre Rock” and the system will display a list of all songs in the category.

Why is there missing information on my iPod/iPhone/USB “Now Playing” screen?

IntelliLink and Gracenote use song information from the device to fill in the blanks on screen. But Gracenote needs to start somewhere. If the artist and album information is missing from your device, then Gracenote may not find an accurate match to fill in missing information on your screen. Make sure the music on your device is up-to-date and accurate.

Does the IntelliLink save all of the songs to its hard drive?

No, IntelliLink only allows you to access music through your connected/paired device. The system has built-in memory, but not a hard drive. The integrated memory is used to store the list of the songs on your connected device this way the system will remember the list every time you connect that device.

Which file formats are supported for songs and playlists?

IntelliLink supports a large variety of song file formats, including MP3, WMA, and AAC. It also supports the following playlist files M3U standard and extended, iTunes, PLS, WAX, ASX and RMP.

Why can’t I find my playlists?

Make sure your playlists are in the supported format. Your playlist will not work if the music in the list is not on the connected device.

Why won’t IntelliLink index my music from my USB?

We recommend that there are no other files on your device when playing music or downloading any data. Any other files could interfere with the system properly indexing your music. We recommend that your USB thumb drive be formatted before loading music and pictures. Some USB thumb drives have special security or encryption software; this software may prevent the device from being recognized. In addition, the system might not support that format of device (i.e. Microsoft Zune).

What different USB devices does IntelliLink support?

IntelliLink supports most smartphones and MP3 players that can be plugged in via the USB port. It also supports many different brands of USB flash drives.

Getting started with Pandora

First, you must have the Pandora app on your smartphone and an active Pandora account. You can easily download the app from Apple’s iTunes App Store, BlackBerry App World or or Play.Google.com for Android apps. After installing the app, log in or create a Pandora account. Like most features on the IntelliLink system, you must next connect your Bluetooth-enabled device4. If you’re using an iPhone, connect through USB. This connection will allow the system to recognize that you have a Pandora account and app on your phone.1 Once this occurs, click the Pandora icon from your home screen or simply say, “Tune Pandora.” Once your device is connected, you will receive a message that Pandora is retrieving your stations. If a device with an active Pandora app is not detected, your Pandora icon will not be clickable.

From here, you can navigate your stations by pressing the (A) MENU key on your touch screen. You will see all of your previously created stations and can scroll through them by touching the screen. Hit the one you want to play, and start listening to your own Pandora personalized radio station right in your vehicle.

Bookmarking

Like a particular artist you’re hearing? IntelliLink gives you access to popular Pandora features that let you bookmark a song or artist to your account. Simply press the (A) bookmark icon on the touch screen and follow the prompts to save it, so you can learn more about it or purchase it at a later time.

Thumbs-Up/ Thumbs-Down functionality

Pandora gives you a feedback option to note if you like what you’re hearing. Each bit of feedback helps further personalize that station to your individual taste. When a song is playing that you like, select the (A) Thumbs-Up icon. The system will store the information and the icon will have a check mark on it.

If you aren’t wild about a track, simply hit the (B) Thumbs-Down icon. This will tell Pandora that you don’t like what you’re hearing and it will add a checkmark to the icon, then skip to the next song. That song will never be played on that station again.

Using QuickMix

Because you may not know what you specifically want to listen to, or just feel like letting Pandora do the work, you can select (A) Shuffle from the Pandora audio menu and the system will shuffle all your stations, creating a unique mix.

Is Pandora Free?

Yes, Pandora is available at no extra cost. However, if you would like to enjoy an ad-free experience, a Pandora One subscription is available. Visit pandora.com for more information.

How can I find my bookmarks?

Bookmarks are shortcuts back to a specific artist or song. Once you add a bookmark, you will be able to access that song or artist through the Pandora audio menu online. Simply scroll through and find the one you’re looking for.

Why can’t I access my station list, bookmark a song, change to the next track or use my Thumbs-Up or Thumbs-Down keys?

Safety is of the utmost importance when driving a motor vehicle. Therefore, certain features may be inactive when the vehicle is in motion. If this happens, the buttons will turn active again upon putting the vehicle in park.

Why can’t I create a station?

Currently, the IntelliLink system only allows you to pull in stations that you’ve already created via the web or your smartphone when it is not connected to the IntelliLink system.

Why can’t IntelliLink open Pandora on my connected iPhone?

Please make sure the iPhone has the latest Pandora app, the phone is unlocked and no apps are running in the foreground (you can see home screen).

Why are there ads on Pandora?

Ads help Pandora pay the bills. Advertising support for free listener accounts helps cover the costs associated with offering a lot of great music for free. If you would like to enjoy an ad-free experience, a Pandora One subscription is available for a yearly fee.

Where did my album art, and Thumbs-Up or Thumbs-Down buttons go?

If you are an OnStar subscriber and use Turn-by-Turn directions, those directions will overlay any active screen on the right-hand side. This means that you may not be able to use the Thumbs-Up/Thumbs-Down icons or see some of the album art while in Turn-by-Turn mode.

Over time, Stitcher will learn your preferences and serve you up shows that Stitcher thinks you will like.

Why can’t I star a program, change to the next podcast or use my Thumbs-Up or Thumbs-Down keys?

Some Stitcher stations may not support certain features, which is why the icons are grayed out or in active. If you can not change to the next pod cast you may be at the end of a station list. Select another Stitcher station from the menu to continue listening

How long does it take to acquire my stations?

Using the AM/FM Radio

To access AM or FM stations, select the “Source” menu from the top left of the screen. Pick AM or FM from this menu and tune to the station of your choice, or select from the station presets at the bottom of the IntelliLink screen.

Using the CD player

Playing a CD is easier than before too. Simply press the CD icon on the touch-screen (A), or say “Play CD,” and IntelliLink will start playing the CD inserted in the player. Like everything else, CD can also be activated from the buttons on the IntelliLink faceplate. Simply hit (B) SOURCE and find the (C) CD function in the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen and you’re ready to go.

What type of CDs does IntelliLink play?

IntelliLink can play standard audio or MP3 CD. It cannot play three-inch CDs.

How should I care for my CD player?

The integrated CD player in the IntelliLink system functions as any other CD player does. Because of this, do not add a label to a disc. It may get caught and in the CD player. Do not use disc lens cleaner, as it may contaminate the lens optic, damaging the player. Insert only one disc at a time. And never play damaged or scratched CDs, as they too may damage the player.

Can I use voice commands to play the AM/FM Radio or CD player?

You can use Buick IntelliLink’s enhanced voice control to find your favorite station or play different tracks from your CD player. Simply press the PUSH TO TALK button on your steering wheel and say, “Tune to FM 96.3” or “Play CD”. And the radio will recognize your request and tune to the appropriate station or CD track.

Getting started with enhanced voice control

Once you connect your music storage device (iPod®/iPhone®, MP3 player, or USB drive), you can access its songs by simply pressing the (A) PUSH TO TALK button on your steering wheel. Once you hear the beep, you’re free to say whatever command you want—“Play artist,” “Play song,” “Tune to” station, “Call” a friend and more.

Pairing with your phone

Once you pair your Bluetooth-enabled phone,4 your entire phone book can be accessed by voice. IntelliLink features high-accuracy, enhanced voice control software that allows you to control everything with the sound of your voice. Just press the PUSH TO TALK button on your steering wheel, wait for the beep and clearly say a command, like, “Call, Amanda.” The system will find the number and dial it for you.

Why does IntelliLink not understand my command?

IntelliLink has high-accuracy enhanced voice control technology, however, there are some things that could interfere with the system understanding your command. Highway speeds, open windows and high fan speeds are just some of the possible things that could interfere with IntelliLink understanding your exact commands. Voice-recognition with background noise is extremely challenging. To remedy this, close all windows and reduce the fan speed to a minimum and retry issuing your voice command. If this still doesn’t work, it may be because you’re speaking too soon. Wait for the beep, then pause a brief second before saying your command. This gives the microphone time to open and prepare itself to receive the speech signal.

Why is IntelliLink not recognizing the number I want to dial?

Because of our speech patterns sometimes we tend to run a string of numbers together, so they may not be as clear as they need to be. You can greatly increase the accuracy of the number, by slowing down and properly enunciating each number. For example you can say, “Dial 5 5 5 1 2 1 2.” If this still does not work, you can use the Digit Dial voice command, which allows you to speak numbers one at a time or in groups. For instance, you can say, “Digit Dial” and IntelliLink will instruct you to enter one number at a time. This is the most accurate way of dialing via enhanced voice control.

Using the steering wheel controls

The steering wheel controls are already set up when you get in your vehicle. The steering wheel audio controls consist of the (A) PUSH TO TALK, (B) MUTE/END CALL, (C) SRC with NEXT/PREVIOUS feature and (D) volume +/- control.

To use some of the voice-activated features, you will need to pair your Bluetooth-enabled phone4 , or connect your smartphone, iPod®/iPhone®, or USB drive3.

Push to Talk

This button (A) activates your IntelliLink’s enhanced voice control capabilities. Touch it once and after the beep, say a command, like “Tune to” a station, “Dial” a contact, “Play” artist and more. This button also lets you answer calls via IntelliLink’s hands-free calling feature.

Mute/End Call

This button (B) allows you to mute the radio from the steering wheel. Just press the button once to mute the audio; press it again to unmute. You also can use this button to end a call.

SRC

This control (C) lets you change sources. Pressing the button calls up the source menu at the bottom of your touch screen. Press SRC button again to highlight the source you want to listen to. You can also cycle through your radio presets. After saving your favorite SiriusXM or AM/FM stations into the system, you can access them without ever having to touch your screen again. Simply press the FAV button to open your Favorites list, and then scroll through your favorite stations. Press SRC to access successive pages, and scroll through your favorites until you find the station you’re looking for.

Volume Control

These buttons (D) let you adjust the volume from the steering wheel.

How do I change sources via my steering wheel controls?

IntelliLink system lets you control almost the entire system from your steering wheel. To change sources from USB to SiriusXM, for example, simply press the SRC button down until you reach the desired source.

Why does toggling the button PREVIOUS/NEXT, not change my source?

The SRC button is the button that changes your source. Although you are toggling it for previous and next stations, you can change your source only by pressing the button. Toggling it up and down will take you to the next or previous favorite station on your favorite-station list.

How can I interact with my OnStar(6) when my phone is paired?

Pressing the Push to Talk button while a phone is paired with your vehicle will default to your paired phone. However, you can still access an OnStar Advisor by pressing the blue OnStar button on the mirror. Access OnStar Hands-Free Calling by pressing the white phone-icon button on the mirror. You can also press the push to talk button and say “OnStar.”

Getting started with homepage customization

Your homepage comes with several default icons. Each icon corresponds to a different feature, like Pandora®, USB, Phone, iPod®, Settings, SiriusXM with Travel Link®, and more. Your IntelliLink system now offers three separate home pages to store all your features and apps. You can customize this page to help you access things quicker. Simply press the (A) MENU button on the bottom of the homepage screen. Find (B) SORT in the list. Tap the first icon you would like to move. After the system highlights that icon, select the position where you would like to move that icon.

Restoring Settings

Sometimes when we customize things, we realize maybe it wasn’t the best layout. Touch the MENU button on the homepage screen again and find the RESTORE DEFAULT SETTINGS in the list. Select it, follow the prompts and your system will reorganize to the default icon listings.

Making favorites

IntelliLink gives you the option to save up to 36 favorite stations. At the bottom of your source screens are 6 favorite presets. To save a station as a favorite, simply tune to that station, and press and hold the corresponding button 1-6 until a beep is heard. It’s now saved. The name of the channel or call numbers will now be displayed in the tab. You can store up to 6 pages of favorite presets. To access another favorite page, press the FAV button. You can also scroll through your favorites by pressing the SRC and toggling PREVIOUS and NEXT on your steering wheel.

Can I customize my IntelliLink homepage?

Yes, IntelliLink lets you organize the icons, so you can easily access the features you use most.

Can I change the number of icons on my IntelliLink homepage?

Yes, you can have up to 8 icons, and you control the amount you want to see. If you only want four shown, the other features will be removed from the page. However, no features are being deleted they will just be accessible by clicking your next

Can I have more than one homepage?

Yes, IntelliLink gives you the ability to have multiple homepages, however, just your first one is customizable. This allows you to put everything you need at your fingertips, while features you don’t access as often will be on other pages.

Where did my icons go?

If you customized your homepage, you may have noticed that one or more of your icons are now no longer on the homepage. They’re not missing. IntelliLink lets you customize your first homepage only. Any features you don’t want on the page for any reason get pushed to your other homepages, which are accessible from your homepage by hitting NEXT on your touch screen.

Getting started with climate display

Climate controls are already working when you enter your vehicle. While you can’t control the climate from the IntelliLink’s touch screen, it does allow you to see visually all of your climate controls anytime you adjust the temperature. The temperature screen will pop up from the bottom showing you the (A) current temperature, (B) air flow (C) fan speed, (D) fan mode and more depending on the options on your vehicle. When you stop using the knobs or buttons, the screen will disappear until the next time you make adjustments.

Why won’t IntelliLink let me control my climate controls from my touch screen?

Currently, IntelliLink is designed to show you the status of the climate control change you made. Many people still prefer to use the HVAC controls on the vehicle console, and not have to touch the screen or speak commands to change the temperature. For simplicity, we give you one way to change the climate and see it on screen.

Getting started with Gracenote® Technology

Gracenote® works behind the scenes, but you determine if you want to use it or not. Gracenote® will always index your device, filling in missing info and cover art and display it on screen. Gracenote® Normalization is a feature for voice recognition search and improved Genre search on screen. When turned on, Gracenote® will combine all common items from a voice search request and make one temporary playlist. To access Gracenote®’s Normalization, press the (A) CONFIG button or (B) CONFIG on the system’s home screen. Then press RADIO SETTINGS on the touch-screen and under NORMALIZATION (C) you can check the feature on or off.

Music search by voice

Gracenote® also improves the accuracy of the IntelliLink system’s voice-recognition capabilities for music search and navigation, letting you pinpoint bands, artists and albums with hard to pronounce names, irregular spellings and thousands of famous artist nicknames that can easily be used as voice commands to access your music. Just press the PUSH TO TALK button and say, “Play Artist ” or “Play Album ” and the system will recognize it on your device and play it over the vehicle’s speakers. You can search using any of the voice commands below, followed by the name of the item you’re searching, such as:

  • Search Artist…
  • Search Composer…
  • Search Album…
  • Search Genre…
  • Search Folder…
  • Search Playlist…
  • Search Audiobook…
  • Search Podcast…
When Gracenote® fills in missing information, does it go back on my device that way?

No, Gracenote® is technology embedded in the IntelliLink system only, it will not fix any missing information on your MP3 player, USB drive or iPod®/iPhone®. However, as long as the information on your device doesn’t change, that information will be in your IntelliLink system every time you get in your vehicle.

Why was information on my collection not completed?

IntelliLink and Gracenote® use song information from the device to fill in the blanks on screen. But Gracenote® needs to start somewhere. If the artist and album information is missing, then Gracenote® may not find an accurate match to fill in missing information on screen. Make sure you music on your device is up-to-date and accurate.

Why is there no album art for my song?

Gracenote® does its best to fill any voids in your music collection’s information. However, there are even some artists or album covers that Gracenote® may not be able to find because information was missing from your music files. If cover art is not available, images of the artist or genre will be displayed in its place.

Why does the Gracenote® logo pop up and down on my screen when a device is connected?

This is perfectly normal. Once a device is connected, Gracenote® starts working immediately to index the song list, and assign voice tags. While this process is happening, the Gracenote® logo will pop up on the screen, letting you know that the technology is working. The length of the indexing process will depend on the number of songs on your device.

Why couldn’t IntelliLink find my artist or song?

Gracenote® assigns digital voice tags so you can access artists, albums, and genres, just by saying their name. However, some new or less popular artists may not be in the Gracenote® database. And there are times when several artists sing different versions of a song or two artists may have the same name. In this instance Gracenote® will show you list of possible matches. Select the one you want to play.

Can my older Bluetooth® phone work with the IntelliLink system?

To take advantage of all the features IntelliLink has to offer, a smartphone running iPhone OS, BlackBerry®, or Android platform is required. Most Bluetooth-enabled phones are compatible with the IntelliLink system, but some features may be limited.

For a list of Bluetooth-enabled phones4, click here.

How many phones can I pair to the IntelliLink system?

IntelliLink allows you to pair up to five different devices. These can be smartphones or other Bluetooth-enabled phones4, and even such Bluetooth-enabled devices as an iPod® Touch.

Will the system recognize any word I say?

While the IntelliLink system has highly accurate voice-recognition software, it recognizes a list of many commands as well as most names. However, at times there could still be names or nicknames that the system cannot recognize.
