How Super Cruise works

Hands-free convenience

With an attentive driver, and under proper conditions, Super Cruise allows hands-free driving on compatible roads. Even changing lanes is hands-free thanks to Turn Signal Activated Lane Change and Automatic Lane Change.

Innovative technology

Super Cruise technology works with Adaptive Cruise Control, which helps you automatically maintain a selected following gap from the vehicle ahead.

Comfortable commutes

Super Cruise functions with OnStar® and uses real-time cameras, sensors, GPS and LiDAR map data to help detect curves, helping make long drives and commutes on compatible roads more comfortable.

See your Owner’s Manual for more details.

How to use Super Cruise

  • Step 1

In order to use Super Cruise, ensure Adaptive Cruise Control is turned on. The Adaptive Cruise Control symbol will illuminate in white on the Driver Information Center. If Adaptive Cruise Control is already set, the symbol will be green with a speed shown.

  • Step 2

When Super Cruise detects you are on a compatible road, paying sufficient attention and all other driving conditions are met (lane markings visible, GPS available, no system faults, etc.), a white Super Cruise symbol will display on the instrument cluster.

  • Step 3

When it is safe to do so, press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel to engage Super Cruise. When the symbol and steering wheel light bar illuminate in green, you may remove your hands from the steering wheel. Do not remove your hands from the steering wheel unless the light bar is green, which indicates that Super Cruise is steering the vehicle. If an Adaptive Cruise Control speed was not previously set, Super Cruise will set the vehicle’s current speed as the cruise speed. To disengage Super Cruise and Adaptive Cruise Control, take control of the steering wheel then do one of the following:

    • Press the brake pedal
    • Press the Super Cruise button again
    • Press the Adaptive Cruise Control button

Super Cruise Alert System

Super Cruise Alert System

Drivers must pay attention to the road at all times. Our Driver Attention System with proprietary head pose and eye gaze software helps to ensure your eyes are on the road, and it alerts you when you need to pay more attention or take back control.

  • First Alert

If the system detects that you may not be paying attention to the road ahead, the steering wheel light bar flashes green to prompt you to return your attention to the road.

  • Second Alert

If the system determines a continued lack of attention to the road ahead, the steering wheel light bar flashes red to notify you to look at the road and steer the vehicle by firmly taking control of the steering wheel. Also, beeps will sound or the Safety Alert Seat, if equipped, will vibrate.

  • Third Alert

If the steering wheel light bar flashes red for too long, a voice prompt will be heard. You should take over steering immediately; otherwise, the vehicle will slow in your lane of travel and eventually brake to a stop, as well as prompt an Emergency-Certified OnStar Advisor to call into the vehicle to check on you. Super Cruise and Adaptive Cruise Control will disengage.

  • Messaging

Super Cruise may not be available or may disengage when active based on several operating conditions. Use the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel to view Driver Information Center (DIC) messages about system operation. If the Super Cruise symbol does not appear, press the Super Cruise button to display a DIC message about why the system is unavailable. Immediately after Super Cruise disengagement, press the Super Cruise button (within 10 seconds) to display a DIC message with the reason for disengagement.

FAQs

What is Super Cruise?

Super Cruise is the first true hands-free driver assistance technology for compatible roads. It uses cameras, sensors, GPS data and LiDAR-scanned map data, and steers to maintain the vehicle’s position in a lane. It works with Adaptive Cruise Control, which helps you automatically maintain a selected following gap from the vehicle ahead. On select vehicles, Super Cruise can also make lane changes. In vehicles equipped with Turn Signal Activated Lane Change, the vehicle executes the lane change once the driver activates the turn signal. In vehicles with Automatic Lane Change, Super Cruise can execute lane changes automatically when enabled in the vehicle Settings menu.

Where can I use Super Cruise?

Available Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance technology only works on compatible roads that have been mapped out by GM. Luckily, more than 600,000 miles of roads are compatible with Super Cruise, including both divided and non-divided highways. These roads have been specially mapped by LiDAR to provide Super Cruise the data needed for hands-free driving. Explore the map of Super Cruise enabled roads here to find ones on the way to your next destination.

Which Buick vehicles offer Super Cruise?

Super Cruise is available on the 2025 and 2026 Buick Enclave, when properly equipped.

How does Super Cruise work?

Super Cruise uses cameras, sensors, GPS information and high-definition LiDAR map data to steer and maintain the vehicle’s position in the current lane. The system works with Adaptive Cruise Control, which is designed to detect vehicles traveling in the same direction in its path and accelerate or brake the vehicle to maintain a driver-selected following distance from the vehicle ahead, even in stop-and-go traffic conditions. However, you still need to pay attention and keep your eyes on the road while using Super Cruise.

Is it a self-driving car?

No. Super Cruise is not a self‑driving or autonomous system. It does not perform all aspects of driving and does not replace the driver. Super Cruise is designed to maintain the current lane, but you must always pay attention in case you need to take control to avoid emergency situations, exit the highway, make a turn, stop for a traffic-control device or perform any other driving maneuver. Super Cruise is only available on compatible roads.

Do I still need to pay attention?

Yes! You must always be ready to take control of the steering or brakes while using Super Cruise. To ensure you’re staying focused on the road, a Driver Attention System camera located atop the steering column monitors driver head and eye position to estimate driver attention to the road. If the system detects you may not be paying enough attention, the steering wheel light bar flashes green. If you continue to remain inattentive, or if you need to take control of the vehicle immediately, the bar will flash red.

In the case of an unresponsive driver, after the first two levels of alerts, a voice prompt will be heard and the vehicle will slow to a complete stop with its hazard lights activated. The vehicle will contact Safety Services so an OnStar® Emergency-Certified Advisor can communicate with the driver.

How do I activate Super Cruise?

Activating Super Cruise is simple and convenient. When you’re on a compatible road, turn on your vehicle’s Adaptive Cruise Control and set a speed. Then look for the white Super Cruise steering wheel symbol in the Driver Information Center. When it appears, Super Cruise is available. Simply push the Super Cruise button on your steering wheel (it looks like a steering wheel) to enable. The light bar at the top of your steering wheel will turn green when Super Cruise is active. When it is safe to do so, and in compliance with any local laws, you may now take your hands off the steering wheel — while keeping your eyes on the road.

Of course, as every vehicle is different, you should consult your vehicle Owner’s Manual for detailed instructions or ask your authorized dealer for more information.

What is Automatic Lane Change?

When enabled, and under certain conditions, Turn Signal Activated Lane Change and Automatic Lane Change can steer the vehicle to perform a single lane change without any input needed from the driver. For example, the system can pass a slower vehicle in its lane, change lanes if the current lane is ending or change lanes to provide space for vehicles merging from an ending lane. A message appears in the Driver Information Center to offer more information on the status of the maneuver.

How can I take over steering control when Super Cruise is engaged?

If you’d like to take control of the vehicle after Super Cruise has been activated, place your hands firmly on the steering wheel. The Super Cruise system will detect that you have taken over control, and the steering wheel light bar will change from green to blue. When the light bar is blue, Super Cruise will stop steering and you must steer the vehicle. To reactivate Super Cruise, center the vehicle in the lane and wait for the light bar to turn green. If you would like to take over steering and deactivate Super Cruise, you can do so by firmly placing your hands on the steering wheel and pressing the Super Cruise button or the brake pedal.

Super Cruise disengaged and I don't know why. How can I learn more?

If Super Cruise disengages while you’re using it, simply push the Super Cruise button within 10 seconds of disengagement for more information. A message will appear in the Driver Information Center with an explanation such as, “No Road Information,” “Driving in Exit Lane” or “Looking Away from Road for Too Long.” You can find descriptions of these messages in your vehicle Owner’s Manual.

Why do I need an active service plan to use Super Cruise?

Super Cruise uses a data connection for real-time, precise positioning of the vehicle, as well as to download regular map updates that help ensure your vehicle has the most up-to-date, accurate maps available for hands-free driving. An active, eligible service plan or trial is required to maintain that data connection.

Is an eligible service plan included with my vehicle?

The 2026 Enclave equipped with Super Cruise includes 3 years of an eligible service plan including the data connectivity required for Super Cruise functionality. At the end of the vehicle’s trial period, you’ll need to purchase an eligible service plan in order to keep using Super Cruise.

My trial is ending. How do I sign up for an eligible service plan to keep using Super Cruise?

The simplest way to sign up for an eligible service plan is to push the blue OnStar button inside your Super Cruise-equipped vehicle and speak to an Advisor. They’ll be able to assist you through the sign-up process. You can also visit GM account, or call us at 1-888-4ONSTAR (1-888-466-7827).
