The iconic Buick GNX

GNX origins

Front View of a Black Buick GNX

In 1987, Buick set out with a goal: design one of the fastest GM coupes to date, a vehicle that would go down in history as one of the most memorable performance automobiles of all time. They achieved that with the limited-edition Buick GNX. The “Grand National Experimental” was an evolved version of the Buick Grand National, which itself was adapted from the Buick Regal. By releasing just 547 vehicles, Buick created an exclusive supercar that captivated vehicle enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike. To this day, the GNX is an iconic figure in American pop culture, representing exhilarating power, sleek design and rare automotive excellence.

Signature design

The speed wasn’t the only element that made the GNX so unforgettable. Adored for its all-black paint and sleek design, the aesthetics of the GNX were the first of its kind. The exterior was complemented by GNX badges on the grille, decklid and wheel centers, which would inspire the bold style of present-day Buick Sport Touring models. Also similar to current ST models were the 16-inch black mesh aluminum alloy wheels. What’s rare to this day, however, were the serial numbers on the dashboard plaque. Each GNX got its own number from #001 to #547.

Constantly evolving

The GNX was born out of a commitment to designing a stunning, premium vehicle that would push innovation forward. Buick is devoted to that same forward-thinking mindset to this day, building vehicles that exceed expectations in aesthetics and technology. It’s been almost 40 years since its release, and the GNX continues to awe and inspire the automotive industry. Because just like modern Buicks, the GNX is exceptional by design.
